60 Second Stories

Creative Black Country has been working with communities across the region to share creativity, fun and positivity via its Creative Connection Commissions. From small ideas big, inventive projects grew including poetry group Connect Dudley and Instagram photography project Yam Cams who are both featured in this short film.

Each project has showcased the power of reaching out to communities and how we can still be creative during challenging times. We decided to bring together the two projects to highlight our love of the Black Country, its diversity and its uniqueness.

This piece was produced by Creative Black Country for Creative People and Place's 60 Second Stories and features two of our 'Creative Connection' commissioned projects: the Connect Dudley Writers Group wrote the spoken word piece and Yam Cams provided the images of the Black Country.

The final recording features the voices of Claire Tedstone and Gordon Elcock. The recording was edited and composed by Bill Laybourne.

I love the contradiction of you

Your wild nature juxtaposed

With your refined design and carefully composed colour

I used to make things

Took the raw materials and made solid things

Your history stands proudly with you

Yet you are alive with the present and growing life for the future

I'm a symbol of the last 30 years of changes

For those that make the effort to explore you

There are treasures to behold

The hidden paradise that refreshes the soul

Calms the mind and breathes new life into me
