The new Desi Pub Catalogue has arrived and we’re offering a small number for a price of £5.
The catalogue features stories and archive images from the Desi Pub landlords about their lives and journey to the Black Country as well as images of the commissioned artworks and the Desi Pub project that has been running since 2016.
Produced in collaboration with Rope Press the 152 page catalogue, which has a gold foil cover detail and is perfect bound, is a limited edition with only 1,000 copies in circulation. The catalogue also includes an illustrated desi pub map to help you plan your pub crawl.
“The Desi Pub catalogue is a bold collection of personal stories inviting the reader to experience the colourful and courageous characters of the seven landlords who have pioneered the Desi Pub phenomena in the Black Country.” Comments the creative team behind the catalogue. “The publication is influenced by each of the landlord’s personal documentation, paper scrapbooks and plastic folders dedicated to memorabilia and photo archives from the 60’s through to the 90’s. You can also get a glimpse into the pubs today and the beautiful pub artwork created by local artists.”
Desi Pubs is an extraordinary story about migration, survival, love and food. For over 40 years, the Black Country has been quietly incubating a gastro revolution, the ‘Desi pub’.
It’s an East meets West story, where the classic English pub with its ales, darts and dominos meets Punjabi food and Bhangra. Landlords Beera, Jinder, Jeet, Dal, Slack and Amrik, have opened their pub doors to six artists sharing their personal life stories and experiences over a pint.
The pubs have helped shape bespoke creations which capture the heart and soul of each venue and their punters. Portraits, stained glass windows, photography, mosaics, and handcrafted pub signs have been produced for permanent display in each pub. This collection is part of an ongoing body of work produced by Creative Black Country that includes an archive, broadcasts and now a beautiful publication.
You can purchase the catalogue for the special offer price of £5 by visiting one of the seven Desi Pubs and buy your copy direct. It is also available from New Art Exchange (Nottingham) and the Light House in Wolverhampton.
