Black Country Digital Firsts: Introducing Gazebo Theatre

This profile is part of our Meet the Next Cohort series which introduces the artists and collectives selected for the second round of Black Country Digital Firsts. Each participant is exploring bold digital ideas that push creative boundaries and expand access to culture in the region.

Introducing: Gazebo Theatre

Gazebo Theatre in Bilston is developing an immersive projection mapped installation that brings nature into an urban setting. By blending sound, imagery, and digital technology, the team aims to create a calming and accessible environment that offers a moment of tranquillity for local residents who may not usually engage with the arts.

What inspired you to apply for Black Country Digital Firsts and how did you hope it would impact your creative practice?

We were inspired to apply to Black Country Digital Firsts as we were interested in upskilling our team using the latest digital technology (projection mapping). We hope to create an immersive installation that brings the Outside, In, essentially creating a sound and visual space that represents nature. We felt that this was particularly poignant as we are based in a very urban area and wanted to bring some tranquillity to Bilston. We haven’t seen anything done like this in Bilston or the local area before, and we would like our experience to be particularly accessible and, whilst open to all, the event aims to be inclusive, particularly appealing to those who might not usually access the arts or have additional needs/be neurodiverse.

What has been the most valuable lesson or insight you have gained from the mentoring and advice sessions provided through Black Country Digital Firsts?

The most valuable lesson or insight from mentoring is probably to remain focussed but to also be adaptable to change if things need to follow a slightly different route. Suggestions from others are always welcome and help with the collaborative creative process.

In what ways do you think Black Country Digital Firsts can amplify diverse voices and perspectives within the Black Country?

Black Country Digital Firsts can amplify diverse voices by supporting new and innovative projects in communities where the arts/creativity isn’t always considered a priority, so that local residents can see that art is for everyone.

How do you now envision the role of technology in enhancing your creative practice going forward?

Going forward, we hope to have a team of artistic practitioners with a new and exciting skillset. We definitely plan on using projection mapping in our future theatre shows!

What advice would you give to other creatives in the region who are considering applying for funding and support?

We would definitely recommend others apply for funding as this is an exciting opportunity to trial something new in a safe and supportive environment.

Black Country Digital Firsts is a unique partnership between Creative Black Country and The Space that aims to build digital creative confidence, inspire excellence in the area, foster digital creativity, commission artists, and offer creative support via mentoring and advice sessions.
