Black Country Digital Firsts: Introducing StudioFX

This profile is part of our Meet the Next Cohort series which introduces the artists and collectives selected for the second round of Black Country Digital Firsts. Each participant is exploring bold digital ideas that push creative boundaries and expand access to culture in the region.

Introducing: StudioFX

StudioFX is developing an ambitious projection and animation project that brings large-scale digital energy to Walsall. By learning new digital tools and experimenting with animated loops, they aim to transform a local wall into a vibrant spectacle inspired by the high-impact visuals of global cityscapes.

What inspired you to apply for Black Country Digital Firsts and how did you hope it would impact your creative practice?

I applied to Black Country Digital because I wanted to challenge myself by learning a new technology. I felt like my work could lend itself to animation and projections and that excites me.

Can you share a little about the project you are working on and why you feel it is particularly bold or imaginative?

I want to transform a wall in Walsall into something that looks like Times Square or Piccadilly Circus. Complete OTT collection of separate animation loops in squares, rectangles and ticker tape strips highlighting the importance of the community and vibrancy of Walsall. I think its bold as it will look like I have imported a wall from New York.

How do you believe fostering digital creativity can contribute to the cultural landscape of the Black Country?

I believe you can contribute to the digital landscape because the work in tech and digital is becoming more remote so people don't have to relocate anymore. If you train people here they stop here with these skill, they will inspire people and help it evolve.

What has been the most valuable lesson or insight you have gained from the mentoring and advice sessions provided through Black Country Digital Firsts?

I find it inspiring that organisations have faith in the region as I think it produces some excellent creatives.

In what ways do you think Black Country Digital Firsts can amplify diverse voices and perspectives within the Black Country?

I think giving opportunities and inspiration work. People need to see whats possible so that they can imagine themselves doing it.

How do you now envision the role of technology in enhancing your creative practice going forward?

I think that the things that I'll learn whilst doing this will transform my career and open up a new part of my imagination.

Black Country Digital Firsts is a unique partnership between Creative Black Country and The Space that aims to build digital creative confidence, inspire excellence in the area, foster digital creativity, commission artists, and offer creative support via mentoring and advice sessions.
