We Are Wolverhampton A portrait of a city, through its people By Graham Stubbs

What makes a city more than bricks and buildings? The people. We Are Wolverhampton is a photographic portrait project capturing the soul of the city, one face and one conversation at a time.

I’ve photographed around 25 individuals from all walks of life: from local councillors to artists, business owners to congregation members at St Chad & St Mark’s Church. Some I’ve known for years, others I’ve approached especially for the project”. Comments Graham about his endeavour to capture Wulfrunians.

Alongside the portraits, I’ve been recording heartfelt conversations about what Wolverhampton means to them, its spirit, its challenges and the pride that runs deep.” This project is, at its heart, a celebration of community. It explores both what connects us and what makes each of our stories unique. “As one participant beautifully put it, “We’re not pretentious, we’re real, and you can just connect with people straight away.” That spirit of openness and connection is exactly what this project aims to reflect.”

We Are Wolverhampton is ongoing, and I’m currently speaking with more residents, organisations, and businesses. My goal is to reflect the true diversity and richness of life in this city. If you’d like to be part of the project, I’d love to hear from you.”

I see a sense of community. It’s really friendly, it’s full of people who help each other no matter where they come from.”

This feature was originally printed in one of the recent Bostin News zines.

There were three zines produced in total, with one message running through each: art belongs to everyone.

Whether it’s stitched, painted, printed, photographed or spoken, creativity helps us imagine better futures, celebrate where we live, and strengthen the ties that make our communities thrive.

Because whatever the question — the answer is art.
