PROJECT: 100 Years Ago and 10 Yards Away
ARTISTS: Jack and Harry Trow

100 Years Ago and 10 Yards Away is a new project led by Jack and Harry Trow.  It will be a short film chronicling West Bromwich Albion’s League championship-winning season of 1919/20. Made with and for the people of the Black Country, as well as people further afield for whom the Black Country and/or football is close to their heart. This project gives those fans a creative opportunity to honour the centenary of this milestone moment in more than a hundred years of sporting success (and sometimes mediocrity) across the Black Country.

2020 marks the 100th anniversary of West Bromwich Albion’s only top-flight championship winning season.  During the 1919/20 season, West Brom scored 104 goals and conceded 47 goals.  As far as we are aware, there is little to no footage of any of that triumphant season, so we propose to fill that gap in history by retrospectively documenting the highlights of the season with ‘re-enactments’ of all 151 goals.

OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED

Jack and Harry are inviting people to make and submit short video clips of a goal being scored from the confines of their locked-down homes.

We are hoping for a wide range of responses to that simple brief.  Participants might ‘perform’ their goal simply by filming themselves scoring in their own gardens for example.  Others might dust off an old Subbuteo set for their goal.  Others might make a stop-motion animation using Lego or Plasticine models. We are encouraging the use of photography, drawings, model making, animation software and live-action performance, as well as hoping to see many other inventive and perhaps more abstract offers.

The submitted footage will then be edited together to make a ‘re-enacted’ highlights reel of the Albion’s victorious season. Today’s ‘stay-at-home-heroes’ celebrating yesterday’s footballing heroes  – A Black Country story for then and now – a snapshot of 21st century lockdown living to document a 20th century football story.

Jack and Harry are brothers.  They grew up in Oldbury and Smethwick and are lifelong West Bromwich Albion supporters.  They are proud to be Black Country lads and keen flag-flyers for the Black Country (and its stories) both at the football and in their work.
