PODCAST: Gavin and the Sound Aloud project

Making music and sounds in tunnels

On the final day, when everybody was there, we went into the tunnel. We spaced ourselves out and we passed some sounds back and forth, and we just improvised and that first song, which is actually on soundcloud was intense, it was emotional, it sounded really good - I wasn’t expecting it to, it just seemed to work and we found we naturally came to end and quietening down.

‘Sound Aloud’ was a project by artist Gavin Rogers who worked alongside women and LGBTQIA+ people living in and around Dudley to find their voices together and discover the possibilities of Netherton Tunnel - a 3 km Victorian tunnel that passes along the canal and under Dudley.

A beautiful soundtrack was made which you can listen to on Soundcloud here and the music has been reaching far and wide, with at least one of the tracks making it on to the dance floor.

Gavin shares a little bit about the experience of this experimental sound project.

We were in middle earth and we were this sound tribe. We knew each other really well by the end of the day which was really powerful and we felt like we were connected.

Thanks to Gavin for sharing his experience to Associate Producer and CBC Creative Advisor Laura Dicken.
