PODCAST: Steve and the Portrait of a Place project

“I found art to really help me mentally.”

Steve shares what it was like to be part of a group making poetry and animation having never tried it before with Dudley Creates commissioned project Portrait of a Place. The project consisted of a series of free online poetry workshops, with poet and playwright Nafeesa Hamid, who guided people through a series of fun exercises to help them discover their poetic voice through writing and editing. Following the workshops participants had the opportunity to put their poetry to a short film made at an animation workshop hosted by artist Sarah Taylor Silverwood.

“Going from something that was really quite amateur, long and quite wordy to something that was punchy and flowed because you learnt all about the music of poetry, which I wasn’t aware of, I hadn’t read much poetry, and the images you create.”

“I sent it [the video] to everyone to look at it… I was really proud of it.”

“There was such a buzz from not knowing how to write a poem to someone saying; ’this works really well, I like what you’ve done’.”

“It’s that buzz to say: ‘I have created that!”

Thanks to Steve for sharing his experience to Associate Producer and Creative Advisor for CBC Laura Dicken.
